On November 4th, the "Onikane Road Walk in Joetsu and Takada" (sponsored by Sado City) was held in Joetsu City, following the "Onikane Road," the road along which gold and silver mined in Sado was transported to Edo. Under a pleasant autumn sky, participants dressed in period costumes walked about 10km through the city, including along the Hokkoku Kaido.
The group of about 80 people departed from Joetsu Cultural Center and visited places associated with the area, such as Kaniike Jizo, Inada Bridge, and Ugatama Shrine, where a tour guide explained to them that "in the early Edo period, when production was high, gold and silver were transported here several times a year."
At the finish line, Gangi Street Plaza, participants were greeted by the local Hokuragawa Taiko drummers. Participants were able to relax and unwind while enjoying the spirited sounds of the drums. The walk event will be held in Nagano Prefecture on November 16th and in Tokyo on the 30th.
